Small Home Montessori: Impressionistic Charts Storage - UPDATE




The original post on the Impressionistic Chart Storage in our home.

Background: 
I have had this over-the-toilet unit since Legoboy was a baby:

haha! yeah right we have that much space around our toilet! 

At the time, I did not want to put baby locks on everything - I had a swing gate at the kitchen door and a variety of outlet covers (mostly ones that could allow things to be plugged in but still locked - child couldn't pull the cord from the wall either).

For daycare licensing purposes I did need a safety handle on the pantry door (because I had to keep the cleaning chemicals below the food - despite that most of the cleaning chemicals WERE food such as baking soda, vinegar and cornstarch... I digress).

When it comes to safety equipment, that is all we had. Our lower drawers/cupboards contained only child-safe items; lower cupboards in the bathroom held cloth diapers, mom's cloth items, towels and washcloths, cup of extra tooth brushes, and toilet paper. All else was stored in the cabinet or on the shelf shown above. It was high enough for daycare licensing, but I still kept "attractive and somewhat dangerous" in baskets on the shelves to minimize attention.


Times have changed. I now have few consistent young visitors to our home - and for them I can close the bathroom door, keep them in arms, or mom is with them.

And I needed the shelf somewhere else:


This shelf fit perfectly (I had to disassemble portions of it to get it to fit under the upper shelf in the closet, but once in, it fits perfectly) and is currently the only place I can safely store the long division with racks and tubes. The charts fit perfectly underneath it - almost like they were made for each other! The bonus is I can now use that space between the charts and the upper shelf much more efficiently. While I am still trying to be cautious what I bring home permanently (from our rented co-op) - to only bring home what we'll use - now I have found a bit more space I didn't know I had!

One bummer: our blue lamp we use for the sun still doesn't fit. I'll get it figured out.

In the bathroom, I was able to place a very low shelf in the corner that held all the things I thought I still needed this tall shelf for (and it has empty space! AND my bathroom looks so much more spacious now!!!). We're obviously far from cloth-diapering at this point and we've gone even more food-based and all-natural with our cleaners, etc. that we just don't have as much as "stuff" in the kitchen and bathroom anymore. Plus in this apartment we do have a small bathroom closet to hold towels and washcloths and art supplies.

I remember having every nook and cranny crammed in with nothing but STUFF. I wish I'd known then what I know now! But it's a journey, that's for sure! And we're not entirely where we want to be just yet.


Hm. Perhaps a photo of our bathroom is in order. Only because this bathroom is actually larger than most and it is the primary place to do artwork. Sounds strange? I'll get photos ;)

Small Home Montessori: Impressionistic Charts


I am asked from time to time how we store our charts. This has changed over the years - and the caveat is that I have the FULL-SIZE mat-board charts from AMI elementary training. These are intended for a full classroom and I would not have purchased from specifically for homeschooling; however, for what I purchased, they were much less expensive than any of the options available for purchase anywhere else (even now), they were a complete set that coordinated with the albums I was creating in training - and, well, they were required for training.

Thus I use what I have, though it is not ideal for a homeschool setting.


For a while, I had a Montessori co-op set up in a rented room at our local church school building, stored in a shelf purchased from a closing Joann Fabric. We just brought home the charts we needed. We were in the building enough times during the week to access the charts for follow-up work, but it still wasn't good to have them separate from us.

Now, I have brought all the charts home. WHAT a relief!!!

   The hanging shelf on the left holds many of the supplies needed for the charts; other supplies are now stored with our regular science materials.
   The charts themselves are organized by their subjects with wooden boards - each board is labeled with the subject and the numbering system for the included charts. I didn't end up cutting enough boards and just wanted the project DONE, so I kept the U and GW charts with the first set of Geography charts (that tab is partially covered: it says 1a-28a - then lists the numbers for the U and GW charts); and I grouped geometry and mathematics.
   The blue binder in the lower left contains master copies of various copyable stuff - mostly from primary, but there are a few elementary. I use that less these days since I can print directly from the computer, but it was handy in the school-rented co-op.
    Notice the box? Yep. Straight from an Alison's Montessori order. Perfect!

I added tabs for art and music - no impressionistic charts for those, but we can keep some of our poster-prints and the like in here as well; I also have a section in the back for blank posterboard, and I have the pegboards in here for now - that plastic lid in the back is just to hold things more securely in place for the time being.

You can see the geometry corkboard plane to the left in the image above - I made it too big to fit in the box and don't feel like cutting it down ;)

If ever needed, I'll find a narrower box for the rolled timelines, so that they fit in a row towards the front and provide more room for the charts themselves.


I use a similar idea for our Communal Prayer materials in our atrium - much smaller charts, but the same concept - so this file system applies to any size if you have stiffer charts. The available cloth charts would need to be mounted for this system to work; I would love to see storage ideas on those because it seems that rolling them all would take up so much more space. Maybe?

Material Making Mistakes - Mathematics


Just sharing one experience we had that I wish I had done differently from the beginning:

I purchased our decimal fraction material after using a cardstock version for a while, with makeshift pieces. The number cards that it came with the purchased material align with the columns perfectly.
I can't find the aligned photo off-hand - but here are the cards it came with. 

I hand-made ALL of our other number card material, including all of primary, the Bank Game (Bank Game is elementary; the "primary bank game" is called Change Game in AMI albums), and others.

For a portion of the work with the decimal fractions, we show how the whole numbers are flipped over, gain a decimal point, and become decimal fractions.

In addition, we sometimes use whole numbers with the decimals to show how it works on the board - most children move through that stage quickly, but even so it is nice to have those whole numbers actually align with the board.

Even most importantly for the first exercise - when we use those whole numbers they know, flip them around to become the decimals, then replace with the actual decimal cards, the numbers should align with the columns.

Mistake made??? - I didn't have any whole numbers that corresponded to the column size on the decimal fraction board.

If I could do it again, I would love to make at least one set of cards that correspond with the decimal fraction board, so that I save myself making a set of cards ;)





Our Bank Game material corresponds with our primary cards, so that I just "added on" rather than created a new set. This should work for most homeschools - but some (with several elementary and several primary might want two entirely separate sets). These cards are larger, but perhaps I could have made them narrower....

Then our wooden hierarchical material - I did ultimately re-create this number card set (for primary we used the number card material I already had, and added on the higher categories - elementary needs commas, so I did create new ones for that in order to keep the primary set comma-free for use with my co-op children). Since these have commas, they don't work for flipping over....

Or perhaps I just need to deal with un-aligned columns or make a new set.

UPDATED past post: Fraction Materials


I recently updated this post on superfluous Montessori materials. Mostly just tweaks.

But I added the information below about the fractions materials and thought it deserved its own post because of the strong emotional response that has been sent my way when I calmly say, "This material is unnecessary." So yes, here I am a bit more emotional ;) Because I really stand behind the Montessori principles involved.


As I state in my other post, I am not intending to offend anyone, but I know this will sound that way to some people. Please consider the Montessori principles at hand; the century that has passed with consistent observations and the development of album pages appropriate to the various stages of childhood. While not everything may be solidly set in stone, the youngest ages do have a very firm foundation. It is the adolescent age where we are still playing with the details.


Fraction sets for 1/11 through 1/20 - there is a keys-based presentation for helping the children work with fraction above 1/10. If a child is given the material for fractions 1/11 and higher, he is losing out on the opportunity to explore on an abstract level. He will always be hindered in his work because he was given "the fish" when he needed directions on "using the fishing pole".

I have had 3 moms tell me their 5 or 6 year old was SO STRONGLY into fractions and since the child was SO young, this hands-on material would be appropriate for them. NO! Can I say that loud enough!? NO!!! NO! NO! NO!
(before we go on: my son at age 4 1/2 was there too - ALL things fractions! a "fraction genius" even! I really thought I had a guru on my hands - and I was ready to feed that guru-ness wherever it took us, but something happened...)


There is a reason that fractions are in the primary album for children ages 5 and 6 - BECAUSE they have an intense interest! So we are already feeding that interest! But we are feeding that interest by providing the FOUNDATION. A STRONG foundation in the basic facts and uses of fractions.

Then if your child is truly a fractions-genius and his interest hasn't yet waned (most children's intense interest in fractions wanes for a year or two, because they 1) need to consolidate and 2) are moving on to other areas of development and 3) there is just so much else to DO) - there are a series of elementary level presentations that are worked on FIRST (and the little genius can certainly do them all in 1st grade if he wants! rather than spread them across 1st-3rd), before you even get to the need for doing 1/11 and beyond. Once you get to the presentation for 1/11 and beyond - WE DON'T STOP AT 1/20! We go to 1/100 and 1/360 and BEYOND even that! So when a child is ready - he's READY! And we don't hold him back! But we lay the foundation FIRST.

Therefore the fractions materials for 1/11 through 1/20 are superfluous at best; a hindrance and a crutch at worst. Don't bother with them!


SUMMARY:
If a child is a fraction genius and it HOLDS, then he has all the primary presentations AND all the elementary work at his fingertips, before he is presented with how to address fraction smaller than 1/10 --- and at that point, a true fraction genius, will be entirely ready for that materials that are provided, or he will be genius enough to make his own material - thus consolidating and applying the fraction concepts at hand in a much more efficacious manner than just handing him the material.

Multi Base Material - Upper Elementary Mathematics

We strive to be keys-based around here. I provide the keys and the opportunities, my son uses them to their fullest potential at the right times.

Great.

Until I won a giveaway through Alison's Montessori for a beautiful, non-essential, non-keys Power of 3 Cube. This is an *abstract* presentation in my album - it is not intended to utilize a material because at that point, the material becomes a crutch to the child. If the child needs a material at this point, the child *creates* the material himself.

So. We're using that one for sensorial exploration for now - as a puzzle - in lower elementary; then I will pull it from the available materials for upper elementary. It's a neat little "puzzle" so I'm ok with that.


But then I placed an order for our remaining Montessori materials several weeks ago. Received everything; then realized I still have a couple of small purchases to make. Oops. That company doesn't have those things anyway, so it's fine. I get my list ready and figure out how much money we'll need to save and I have it ready for the right time. Ok :)

But then I went and pulled this out of storage (given to us a while back - I'd tucked it away without thoroughly checking it beforehand). I thought it was the Non-Decimal Base Board, but I never thought to wonder what was in the BOX (non-decimal base board does not require a box).

This is the one sold at Alison's' - ours is identical, but I don't know where we got it.
It's pretty - it looks neat - but it is definitely NOT an essential material.
Why do companies sell the non-essentials and LEAVE OUT so many of the essentials? 


I am now the keys-based, flummoxed owner of TWO non-keys-based materials that I didn't know I was getting! ;)


I *thought* it was the board for Non-Decimal Bases. But it's not. And I have *nothing* in my albums for this Multi-Base material. Thus it could be a great work to do! But it is not keys-based - it is an extra. I am "ok" with that to an extent, but if I can't figure it out in under 30 seconds, with my experience and training, then is it really going to be necessary for the child?
NO.

But my son MIGHT be interested in it and it might make a FANTASTIC follow-up if that is where his interests go (no, the local educational requirements in our area will not require what this board teaches, so I can't even pull it in for that purpose!).

Wish I'd double-checked first! Because now I don't have the Non-Decimal Bases board - but that should be easy enough to just draw out on posterboard. And anyone else who needs Non-Decimal Bases Board and you've already made a chart for primary use of organizing the golden beads into their categories (that chart being another non-essential material that could be useful and even necessary in some cases - it is 4 columns, with a row at the top to designate that units, bars, squares or cubes go in a particular column)... Just use that! Fine. I'm good with that. Easy and cheap!


But what do I do with this Multi-Base material? I am flummoxed and, frankly, borderline annoyed - both at myself for not checking a long time ago and at companies for making this stuff. I am looking for an album page, a set of album pages - or someone to just tell me which company sells an album that has it - just to save me time figuring it out and making up the album page(s) myself.

Any ideas?


I have contacted 5 companies who sell it, of the 3 who have responded thus far, they have no idea either! So my next question is where did they get the instructions on how to make the material? Many of the discount places get their materials from the same place in China I am sure, but not everyone gets their stuff from there; so where did the original pattern come from?

It is very sad and very disheartening that the gray line between "essential" and "extra" (but could still be good) is so blurred, that there are sometimes "extras" that just aren't even good, but are still being called Montessori - but that is for other posts!

(UPDATE 12/29/12: All but two companies have responded back to me; I contacted 3 others who all responded. Not a one of them has any clue how to use this material, or even where the pattern actually came from. Wow.

Last Elementary Montessori Order

I just placed our final Montessori materials order - and couldn't believe what a struggle it was to reach the free shipping level! We had all else we needed!

Wow.

One more year of lower elementary, 3 more years of upper elementary to come... and we have everything???

Ok, we'll still be purchasing and borrowing things along the way - items to correspond with interests, replacement chemicals and other supplies - but the Montessori-specific items are done.

Overall... elementary is no more expensive, Montessori-wise, than primary, perhaps cheaper (I'll look at actual numbers another day!) - and covers SIX years.

And the re-sale value canNOT be over-stated!

Those hands that were so tiny at birth.... 




This is a bittersweet day. It means a preparing for a closing of one area of life (browsing Montessori catalogs, determining what to make and what to buy and from whom), but it also means a true settling in. Settling in for the next 4 years. Settling into just BEing in elementary. Then on to adolescence.


Ok, scratch that last sentence. Just focus on this time. Right now. The moment we have - right now - together.

School Shopping!

School shopping season is coming up (at least in the US and Canada) and I thought I would put together a list for what items to be on the lookout for when you're stocking up:


Target Dollar Rack possibilities:
  • miniature globes (for primary Montessori, get 3-6: sandpaper (land and water), continents, political, climates, oceans (you may want a larger one for the oceans), and a 6th topic I can't think of right now)
  • flashcards - buy at least 2 copies of each; 2 sets creates 3-part cards with a control set and a cut set; 1 set creates flashcard games and/or classifying by type; 2 sets uncut could be matching games; 2 sets with one cut or uncut could be mounted onto cardstock and made into a booklet; you could overlap some of these ideas. 
  • Flashcards for elementary - animals and plant images can be used for classification rather than hunting down and printing images or using magazines to cut up - usually one set is sufficient, unless you want to have a separate set for the information on them; or a third set so you have 2 to make a booklet and  a third set for the classification. 
  • Small writing notebooks if they carry them this year

Any Back to School specials: 
  • quadrille paper - either loose-leaf or in bound books - used for almost any subject in elementary (we prefer loose-leaf to create our own notebooks via binders or other binding)
  • spiral notebooks for taking notes of various sorts - single subject: stock up on a lot; 3 or 5 subject, smaller quantity, but they will be used too (perhaps the whole notebook is on Ancient Egypt with each of the 5 sections being a particular theme)
  • pack of loose-leaf notebook paper: wide-rule for primary and college rule for older elementary
  • package of large erasers - the ones on pencils just aren't enough and the ones you add to the pencils have too much waste
  • decent colored pencils in the basic colors (you might have a family set for everyone, but everyone should have their own set of basic-basic colors - prismacolor are my favorite)
  • pencil pouch (better a thinner pouch than a large box - easier to transport when needed) - holds the eraser, a couple of pencils, a good sharpener (all metal is best), set of basic colored pencils, and perhaps a tiny notepad, you might have a pen in here too
  • tiny notepads - they usually come in 3 packs and they are small - they are great for field notes, quick notes, short lists, and just anything that would otherwise waste a large sheet of paper -- easy to transport in a pencil pouch ;) 
  • lunch bag and drink bottle - even homeschooled children can use a lunch bag and bottle for outings, trips, picnics, etc. And this is the best time to buy them. 

NOTE: For the most part, assignment books are the not best equipped to handle an elementary child's work plan or work contract; but if you find one that does work, post a link or image here!

Montessori Materials

SOAP-BOX ALERT! This post is about me and my reactions to current materials offered by Montessori companies. It is not about my son or his education, at least directly. It's about me and my emotions.

I will not be offended if you choose not to read this. I do not intend to offend anyone with the following words, but I feel certain that someone will think I have said something offensive.

Let me say here and NOW: each family must choose for themselves and I don't judge the "extras" that you choose. We have extras too. My soap-box has to do with the impression of Montessori in the public sphere because of these "extras".

Child-created Materials

Here is an example of what I mean about the children creating their own materials - we adults do NOT need to kill ourselves making everything FOR the child - especially the elementary child.

Earlier this week, I allowed my son to use our new video camera to experiment with - take some nature pictures and the like - he's been working on a nature book and we were at Grandma and Papa's home, with 60 acres of land at his disposal. I thought he could take some pictures of some things he'd seen on the property. He didn't get far on the nature book because of the new technology in his hands. He's really been working at perfecting his photography skills (the video camera takes stills too), getting interesting angles, working on lighting and such.

Today, we're not officially back to doing school again - but our Montessori way has allowed learning to take place anytime. We've also not entirely cleaned up from our trip away from home; and the old scroll saw (it's dead; it had been in my car trunk before we left; then placed in our living room while we were gone) is still sitting in our living room.

My son decided to make a "Parts of the Saw" booklet for our co-op class. And away he went.

He will organize the photos (with me) in a file, with the titles (he will type it in) and we'll print them out and make a booklet. I am with him, guiding him, but it is he who is looking at the object, noticing the details, deciding what is important, discussing with me any areas of disagreement, coming up with a definition or using resources (yes, I count as a resource) for finding a definition; organizational skills; leadership (he will present the work to the younger children so that he catches his own errors or just finds something that could be explained with more detail or less detail). This is HIS experience, HIS learning, HIS growth.

And I'm right here with him, enjoying the journey, but respecting his space to explore and discover for himself.

He's only missing the blade ;)

Beautiful Materials

When I started our little co-op last year, I did not have the metal fraction insets. We had some plastic fraction circles (each number with a different color; and not all numbers represented) and these:

This work is meant for the elementary children to do lots and lots of fraction operations. The primary children, if they get to fractions, will only work with the metal pieces - using them for making designs, discovering equivalencies, and very simply operations. We just never had them in our home environment - it would have been better if we did; but we made do with the plastic pieces (at least we had *something* hard/stiff - I found the fractions to be necessary, just not the most readily affordable). 


Now, several months ago, I purchase the metal insets used. There is one piece missing, I am ordering from a company that is taking their time getting it to me. I might just cut it out of wood for now and paint it!

The children came in to the co-op as usual; I said *NOTHING* about the new material - which is kind of in a back corner. 

Within 45 seconds, there was a group of children sitting around admiring them, picking them up very so carefully, seeing if they could put them in another place. They were in AWE. These were elementary children - not the primary kids! 

Here is what they saw on a low box on the floor:

Since then, they have also discovered these:

Now, I've not formally presented this material to anyone but my own son yet; but the elementary children have already "matched" them with the fractions and given them their "proper family names" of whole, family of halves, family of thirds, family of fourths and quarters (that is the phrase they chose to use!). 

Without even a presentation, the children were DRAWN to these materials. Which makes the presentations that much more meaningful. 

They beg to receive a presentation on an intriguing material - sometimes I feel like my presentation is only going to be a let-down, especially if we have to wait for several weeks, but it never once has been a let-down! 

All of these materials have been more than worthy purchases or investments of time. And I am so happy to share them with my co-op children; not just my own child :)

I chose the colors - you could use green (phonogram) and black (rest of the word) to start, then add red for the later activities (red denotes "new").
All stored in a Plano 3701 Tacklebox - one alphabet per tacklebox. This box has curved bottom for ease of removing the letters; and just the right number of compartments needed in the right sizes!

NOTE: This set started out as a tile-based movable alphabet - I had the consonants in red and the vowels in blue - so that longer stories could be written. But then, we transitioned to full-color alphabets.
In a home with lots of children, you'll probably want both types - this post is just about what we have now ;)

For our homeschool and co-op, this has been enough thus far; but I will soon be adding another printed color set because of the number of children needing this material at co-op. For PRIMARY, 3 sets is sufficient, and you could get by with 2. For ELEMENTARY, you really want 3 sets for home use, possibly 4 for ease of use - it is used for a LOT of things, in particular word study and spelling games. It is easy to make and the tacklebox is perfect size.

At first, I did not print the capitals on the back - we needed the lower case right then, so I didn't take the time to add the capitals until we needed them and I just wrote some in; but the capitals should be on one side and the lowercase on the others; as well as cards for punctuation in one of the colors, so that longer stories can be written out. This is where children learn punctuation and capitalization - with this small movable alphabet.

So why the Plano 3701 Tacklebox?

  • With the dividers it comes with, there are enough slots for all 26 letters in the same box. You could even add punctuation if you are so inclined (there are sets in my primary album that include punctuation). 
  • the far and near sides of the bottoms are curved so the letters slip out so easily with one's fingers (flat bottoms do not allow for ease of removal at all)
  • The dividers stay in place so letters don't slip underneath (at least in my experience; the flat bottomed ones allow for sliding of the letters to the next compartment)
  • They are affordable at $10 each; and free shipping on Amazon if over $25; I've sometimes seen them in the $8 range as well. 

We have other alphabets, but this is it for our movable alphabet collection ;)
